Counselling and psychotherapy are professional activities that utilise interpersonal relationships to enable people to develop self-understanding and to make changes in their lives.
Counselling
Usually short-term and is meant to support the person to resolve and continue to perform their day-to-day activities more effectively. The aim is to address immediate and pertinent issues which are less in-depth. Talk therapy is involved in helping our client to rationalise thinking and facilitate the planning of solutions to the problem.
Psychotherapy
Usually longer-term and is used to uncover core emotional issues and needs and to address them. Such issues include trauma, attachment issues and mental health-related issues. The therapist may use different modalities (techniques for therapy) to help out clients explore deeper meaning and answers to their problems.
